I've not posted for a while because I was blocked, trying to come up with a good back story, the what actually happened to produce the dead body.
I think I have something that works now. I was looking for a motive that was at least a little different. I figured it should relate to the eagle, bird watching. Bird watchers take their bird watching quite seriously. That's why this guy was parked every day at lunch time to catch glimpse of the eagles.
What, then, if the woman victim, the one he was speaking to, the one others thought he was having an affair with, actually turned out to be a big enough problem to bird watchers that she had to be gotten rid of. That could be the case if she owned the property that housed the eagles' nest, and had decided to sell that property to a developer, who would take down the trees to put up houses, thus destroying the eagles' habitat. That might enrage somebody enough to want her dead to stop this transaction.
If I were writing a novel, I could extend this thread in a number of directions, including the woman's lawyer, who set up her estate a certain way, and who might also benefit from her death, and so on and on.
But I intend this to be a story, so I'll keep it relatively simple.
Now, I have to invent the killer. And the manner of the killing. Let's have it be a woman. Perhaps she is the woman's secret lover. That might be a good twist.
We'll see how that works.
